Some thoughts about Hebrews 9.

Quote

There seems to be some misunderstanding or difference of opinion of what the words about the standing of the first tabernacle meant in Heb 9;8.

Heb 9:1-12 KJV 1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. 2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. 3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; 4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;...... 6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always {DAILY) into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. 7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: 8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the (SERVICE OF) the first (OUTER) tabernacle was yet standing:

Its easy to think of the first tabernacle in vs 8 as if it referred to the whole temple and it's service as a contrast with the eternal temple and tabernacle of Jesus.(vs11,12) not made with hands. But in Heb chapter 9:1-10 when the writer refers to the first tabernacle, he is referring to the service of daily sacrifices in the outer tabernacle in contrast with the yearly service in the second, (vs 7) inner tabernacle, the holy of holies.  The writer is saying that the continuation of the daily sacrifice immediately after the yearly sacrifice was (is) the holy spirits testimony to the priests and people (past and present tthat the yearly sacrifice had been (always was) inefficatious to atone for sin. The writer is NOT saying in heb 9:8 that as long as the Temple was still "standing" that the sacrifices were still "valid" and that the real way to the holy of holies was not ratified, valid or made known. It had been made known by the holy spirit to those who believed, by the apostles and the by the torn temple veil and earthquake.

THE USE OF THIS GREEK WORD TRANSLATED "STANDING" IS USED ELSEWHERE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT TO REFER TO A REBELLION OR OPPOSITION. HERE IN HEB 9:8 IT DESCRIBES A CONTINUATION OF THE DAILY SACRIFICES IN THE OUTER TABERNACLE AS STANDING IN OPPOSITION, REBELLION or in JUXTAPOSITION TO ANY CLAIM OF EFFICACIOUSNESS OF THE HIGH PREISTS WORK IN THE HOLY OF HOLIES . It does not mean "a validating presence or standing". (SEE THAYERS AND STRONGS BELOW) In late chapter 9 and early ch 10:1-4 he emphatically affirms that the blood of bulls and goats could never atone for sin or purge the conscience .

And prophets from Abel onward in making animal offering and sacrifice understood that the blood (death) of the creator/lawmaker (testator)was required to redeem his beloved from the edenic (or mosaic) law which the creator himself had declared. They were making prophetic patterns and shadows of everlasting covt elements in faith in his goodness and love from very beginning.

Heb 10:9 Which was a figure for the time then present, (or the present time) in which were (are) offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could (can) not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10 (.......) only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed........ until the time of reformation. 11 But Christ being come (2nd aorist) an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Even acknowledging the present tenses where the kjv interprets a past tense to also associate Christ work against their previous service, since Christ being already come, the time of reformation had already begun and the apostles we're already in the time of the seasons of refreshing (since Easter and pentacost onward) with even more yet to come with the removal of the persecutors and offense of the continued temple service..

The writer of Hebrews in 8:7,8,13 is stating that the mosaic covt had been declared OLD by God when Jeremiah prophecied contrasting characteristics of the Everlasting Covt calling it New in Jer 31.   Paul, in 2 Cor 3 declares the old covt to already be (present tense) done away and describes it as (then presently, not future tense) abolished. Heb 8:13 then affirms that which was made old by God through Jeremiah (Heb 8:7,8) is (has been) waxing old and was then near to passing out of sight or vanishing.
